Going to finish playing here at tribe and will then go scrape my cheeks. Family Tree version. Is the Oxford that much better? I could have ponied up a little extra for that one.

    Oooh cool.
I got the Oxford one for my ex several years ago. I would love an overview from those of you out there in the know about what my options are nowadays!

Family Tree DNA does have options for women...the mtDNA test. They offer 12 and 25 marker versions. They also offer a kit to convert an Oxford test to theirs.

I went with Family Tree DNA, as they had the best precision at the time. There is another company now with more, but I think we're just chasing the rainbow at that point. I had both the mtDNA and the Y-37 done. Turns out that I'm related (who knows how many generation ago though) to the sun of the CEO of FTDNA!

Matrilineally, I assume, otherwise you'd also be related to the CEO. Pretty cool stuff. I was attracted to this as I'm an amateur genealogist, but have an awfully common name and descend from a line of poor record keepers.

I fell in with an internet group who is researching Williamses from eastern KY (where my ancestors may have come from) and we're all looking forward to the results and encouraging any Williams men to participate (just Y chromosome stuff for now). The possibilities of proving and/or disproving certain traditions and family lines is compelling. But, as one researcher pointed out, the y chromosome test is only as 'good' as your female ancestors.

Recently an unrelated Williams group who's testing got an unusual surprise: a complete match from someone named Wright. Research indicated that these two families had lived next to each other and had even migrated together to another state (several generations ago). They are currently searching for the descendants of earlier generations to find out whether there's a Williams or a Wright in the woodpile. FTDNA is calling it an 'event'.

          This stuff is fascinating.

Also check out the genographic project. They give you a nice report as to the path you took to where you live today.

Have done. Unfortunately, my particular 24 marker mix seems to come from all over the place. Name the area of Europe and there's someone there who matches me (particularly in the 12 marker arena). Next I'm going to pony up for mtDna test and perhaps the haplogroup and see what happens.

The haplogroup is actually very useful. If you have a multi-ethnic lineage, you may also want to try an Autosomal test. That's the next thing on the list for me to try.

I got the 37 marker test done by the way and also the mtDNA test as well.
