Anyone know about inherited autosomal recessive genetic traits?

My nephew, who is 20, has Rothmund-Thomson Syndrome, a rare inherited disease. Because both of his parents (my sister and Sean's dad) both carried the recessive gene, Sean (my nephew) is certain that his parents were related somewhere down the family tree. I say NO WAY! Anyone with some facts I can give this kid
